A film of more observation than plot–and much natural, seemingly effortless acting–“Halfaouine” finds Boughedir celebrating the pleasures of everyday life with a loving sense of humor–the friendly, spirited exchanges between customers and merchants, the camaraderie of the barber shop, the communal experience of the baths. Noura is a boy in great danger of not learning how important it is that a man avoid socializing with women–even when his father tries to slap it into him.

MOVIE REVIEW : Exquisite ‘Terraces’ a Tale of Coming of Age in Tunis

He’s not close to his father Mustapha Adouania sometimes bullying traditional macho type who runs a fabric shop and who flirts with his female customers. Ferid Boughedir’s warm, sensual and witty mkvies of the Terraces” is one of the most exquisitely told coming-of-age tales imaginable. Noura Selim Boughedir, the director’s nephew is an inquisitive thirteen-year-old whose eyes are opened to his own sexual desires when he visits the local Turkish bathhouse with his mother.

Instructional Films and Lessons. He leaves us sensing that just as Noura has begun to turn from boy into man his world most likely will change as much as he will. The continual presence of adults who do not understand or even notice Noura’s lonely struggle toward manhood enhances this effect.

In doing so he cannot but remind us of how all too rare this view surfaces in contemporary world cinema. Ellie, a year-old immigrant girl from Israel, is lonely and homesick. Ayesha, a Muslim woman who boughefir by on her late husband’s pension and by teaching young girls the Koran, invests her hopes in her beloved son Saleem.


His mother, various female relatives and their friends spend so much boughsdir there that the atmosphere is that of a harem. Director and screenwriter Ferid Boughedir keeps the tone light without silliness, hinting at trouble bougheddir for the free thinkers without turning the film from its main interest. We meet his “boy of the terraces,” the handsome year-old Noura Selim Boughedir, the director’s talented nephewnot on the neighborhood rooftops or terraces –where he retreats to sort out his thoughts, emotions and dreams–but in a women’s Turkish bath.

And yet some of the film’s narrative moves slowly, dragging out the climactic moments in order to introduce subplots involving political subversives and the hypocritical behavior of many of the male figures in the film, such as Noura’s overbearing father Si Azzouz Adouani. Since he’s still essentially a little boy, he gets washed in the female side of the steam bath. Si Azzouz,the Father Mohammed Driss: Twelve-year-old Noura is an impressionable boy who must learn to reconcile two conflicting worlds – the loving world of Moslem women and the vastly different, harsher world of men – while also dealing with his own budding sexuality.

A First Time for Everything.

He’s just become too old to spend too much time with women, who’ve clearly fussed over him all his life, yet he’s still too young for the company of men.
